Toshiba 55' LCD Everything I Wanted December 13, 2009 R. Wardwell 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'd been resisting the urge to replace my 10-year old Toshiba 56" projection TV that I gifted away rather than try to move to our new home earlier this year. The price and quality equation finally came together with this 55" Toshiba HD LCD TV. I thought I might settle for something smaller but my adult son, the Techy, convinced me that his only regret was settling for something smaller when he bought his HD/LCD.
The picture quality is great...particularly on cable HD but certainly looks better in every respect and on every channel than our old projection TV. I was amazed at how easy it was to set up with HDMI cables. I think it actually took me longer to install the safety cables (not furnished but recommended) to keep this big boy from tipping over. My wife was relieved and pleased that three thin HDMI cables replaced the unsightly clumps of wire spaghetti that used to live behind our old projection TV that linked TV, cable box, and DVD player. If this TV gives the 10 years of trouble-free service that our last Toshiba provided, it will have been a great investment in entertainment.
Excellent Choice January 2, 2010 M. Polhemus (Atlanta, GA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
After research for a new LCD TV, we decided on the Toshiba and were not disappointed. This unit received the #2 spot on consumer reports list for a reason. Using the proper cables to support the highest refresh rate we experienced an excellent picture. Until we purchase the receiver we would like, we continue to use the TV's speakers. They provide adequate sound but nothing stellar. A nice surround sound system is sure to compliment the beautiful picture on this 55" set but isn't mandatory. We're very happy with our decision and expect years of trouble free service from this set as we've owned a smaller Toshiba Regza TV for several years with no issues whatsoever.
Great HDTV!!! March 24, 2010 Toshiba Fan (Houston Texas) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this TV on a Friday afternoon and was delivered the following Tuesday. Just before it arrived, the price dropped $100.00 to $1299. I emailed customer service requesting a price adjustment, and five minutes later, they responded with a "yes", but this was an "exception" to their policy, since the item had not been delivered yet. These details may be important to some of you.
I am not going to get into "videophile speak" like others since I am not one. However, I will say this is a great TV in many ways. Consumer Reports 2010 Buying Guide listed this item as a "CR best buy", and that is with a $2,000 list price. I decided on this one after weeks of research (online, big box stores). But having this recommendation by CR made me go with Toshiba, with Samsung and Sony coming in second and third. I've had other Toshiba products (TV's, DVR) and they work great after years of service. I'm glad I went with Toshiba.
excellent value April 1, 2010 Kwisatz Haderack 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I own a number of HDTVs (1 Olevia, 4 Samsungs, 1 LG, and 2 Toshibas) and finally decided to get this one instead of a more expensive Samsung model. I waited until the price dipped under 1300 with free delivery, and couldn't be happier. The glossiness of the screen does not bother me, but I can see how some people might find it objectionable (especially if they are used to the nice matte Samsung screens). I did a lot of research online and found some erroneous information out there; for instance, some reviews indicate that this set has a swinging stand. It does not. Another thing you should be aware of is that there is an audio issue out there with this series of HDTVs, where the audio gets garbled up and echo-like when it is being fed through an HDMI cable after a couple of hours. I never use this particular setup (anytime HDMI is used I pump the audio through a sound system and not the internal speakers), but a lot of people do have this problem as seen in AVSFORUMS. AS of the writing of this review, Toshiba has released a firmware update that apparently fixed the issue, but it has not posted it online and can only be obtained if you call them to complain about this issue, in which case they send you a 2 GB flash drive with the firmware update. People who have applied the update report that the audio issue has not come back after 10 days of use. Other than this issue, this HDTV is an amazing value after being properly calibrated. Hope this review helps.
Best LCD Big Screen I have seen November 20, 2009 M. A Spitzer (Fort Lauderdale, Florida USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I will keep this review really short -- as far as LCD technology.... this is the nicest 55" big screen I have ever seen.
I will defer to the other reviewers for more specs and details.
